Warning is returned when plotting downhole data together with pierce points on a plan map

Article Number: 000002492
Product: Oasis montaj, Target, Target for ArcGIS
Last modified date: 2012-05-07

Symptom:

I would like to plot downhole data together with pierce points on a plan map.  However, this warning is returned when I select downhole data to plot and Piece Points is selected as the Trace Style option.

"Warning: Down-hole data plotting options were selected while plotting pierce points. Down-hole data cannot be plotted with the pierce point option selected."

Resolution:

In both Target/Oasis montaj and Target for ArcGIS, pierce points and downhole data cannot be plotted together directly. Indirectly however, this can be done and the workflow has 3 main steps:

  1. Create a plan map with pierce points.
  2. Create another plan map with traces and downhole data.
  3. Copy the downhold data from the traces map to the pierce point map.

Target and Oasis montaj

To create a plan map with Pierce Point as the Trace Style:

  1. Select the holes you would like to plot on your plan map (DH-Plot menu > Select Holes).
  2. DH-Plot > Plan Map.
  3. From the Hole Traces tab, select Pierce Points as the Trace Style.
  4. From the Data tab, do not select any downlole data (i.e. Bar plot, Numeric bands, Rock patterns, etc...).
You can select a gridding option if you choose.
  5. Set up the remaining tabs as required.
  6. Click OK.
To create another plan map with Hole Traces and downhole data:
  1. Repeat the steps 1 and 2 above.
  2. From the Hole Traces tab, select Hole Traces as the Trace Style.
  3. From the Data tab, select the downhole data to plot (i.e. Bar plot, Numeric bands, Rock patterns, etc...).
  4. Click OK.
Another plan map with the same extents will be created but with traces and downhole data.
To copy the downhole data to the pierce points plan map:
  1. On the plan map with pierce points, select the Data View in the View/Group Manager Tool.
  2. Now make the traces plan map the active map by clicking on it.
  3. From the View/Group Manager Tool, select the downhole data from the Data View.
You can multiple select groups using Shift or Ctrl.
  4. Drag the selected groups from the View/Group Manager Tool and drop them onto the map area of the pierce points plan map.

Target for ArcGIS

To create a plan map with Pierce Point as the Trace Style:

  1. Select the holes you would like to plot on your plan map (Target Drillhole Toolbar > Selection menu).
  2. Click Generate Target Plan Plot > OK.
  1. Into the same MXD project, repeat the steps 1 to 2 above.
  2. On the Output tab, change the Frame/Layer Name Tag (and Filename Tag if you are plotting Shapefiles).
  3. From the Hole Traces tab, select Hole Traces option
  4. From the Data tab, select the downhole data to plot (i.e. Bar plot, Numeric bands, Rock patterns, etc...).
  5. Click OK.
Another plan map with the same extents will be created but with traces and downhole data.
To copy the assay data into the pierce points map:
  1. From the traces data frame in the Table of Contents, select the downhole layers to copy.
You can multiple select layers using Shift or Ctrl.
  2. Drag these selected layers and drop them onto pierce points data frame in the Table of Contents.
Alternatively hide or delete the layers that show the hole trace information from the second map.

Root Cause:

Downhole data cannot be directly plotted with pierce points or collars on a plan map. Only gridded data can be plotted with pierce points or collars selected as the Trace Style.
